Our first geocaching event

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Myself and Preseli Junior attended our first South Wales Geocaching Event today. Let’s Meet by the Seaside!!!!  Was organised by another South Wales cacher Mollyjak.

It was a great experience and a chance to put faces to all those names I had read in the log books on various trig points and secret hidyholes accross South Wales.

A well organised and friendly event held at the Hi-Tide in Porthcawl. A lovley venue with fantastic food.

Mollyjak had placed 5 new caches in a circular route around Porthcawl in the pouring rain the day before and Graculus (our local Groundspeak moderator) had kindly kept an eye open for them and published them in time for the event!

Big thanks to everybody concerned in organising a fab event and thank you for my Geocoin gift!

Was it here somewhere?(Not sure what happened to this post. It w\s blank when I looked now!)

This cache… Mmmm 4 crossing maybe ? was ver close to my home, so I just had to go and look for it… it suggested that a night rv would be good so that is exactly what I did!

On the road…

Whilst working away I decided to try a couple of quick caches to aleviate the boredom of sitting in the car most of the day… Church Micro 11…Mickleham, The teddies Membury micro M4 services west bound, Motorway Mayhem M4 J36 - Molly Shops !!!!, Motorway Mayhem M4 Reading Servs E’bound (J11-J12) and SideTracked - CC16 Keynsham and Somerdale

Whilst at Bridgend services I had tried to tackle another… Rock Point, my first DNF (Did Not Find), as previous cachers had also logged DNF I guess it is missing in action. Rats!

As you can see they range from the M4 in South Wales right over to just off the M25 to Dorking in Surry… I should have done some more as over the course of a week I did over a thousand miles and went quite a bit further afield…

The very top of Cwm ClydachI needed a break from driving and the car so I hopped right back into the car and went up to the tops of Cwm Clydach.

The intention was simple… but I had not read the notes properly for Cwm Clydach Crossing and tackled the cache from above down and not from below (and upstream) as recommended!

Day 1

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

This post is written in retrospect… we started the hobby on Wednesday after a friend told me about it on a trip to the Royal Welsh Show the previous day.

After some research I found that there was a cahce a small distance away from my home so as the school holidays had begun and tearing my son away from the Wii is always a challenge at the best of time a simple ‘Would you like to do a Treasure Hunt?’ was all it took to get us moving! (more…)
